Sunday Outage
Sunday morning, our network was attacked by “zombies” - non-secure (usually Windows) personal computers taken over by scripts - to perform a Denial of Service attack. This kind of attack attempts to overload a network’s ability to respond by sending repetitive data requests, like loading webpages over and over. The zombies generated 8 times our normal traffic, all aimed at one site that we host, and the attack was successful for a few hours. We were able to cut through the attack early Sunday afternoon, and full service was restored. During the attack, email, FTP, and website availability were all affected and were intermittent.I want to make sure two things are clear:
- Our network was not compromised, nor was any data affected or compromised. Your sites and billing information remains safe and secure.
- This outage was not related to our recently-announced move to a new data center. We will continue to make every effort to minimize the impact of this move, and are excited to see how this move will positively impact our ability to serve you.
Please let us know if you have any questions about this attack or the data center move. Feel free to either email or call us.
