Blog craziness
If you subscribe to our blog, you may have noticed our feed resetting today. Our blog developed a mysterious malaise a few days ago, and it took some intense surgery to sort it out.
During the last update, our Categories disappeared. Gone. No trace. Couldn’t add them back, even. I tried all of the suggestions at the Wordpress support page, nada. Deleted the wp_categories table, and ran the update again. Nothing. Oh boy.
So, I did an “export” from within the admin, then grabbed a copy of all of the files. Deleted all files, dumped all wp_ tables. Fresh install (can you smell the “new-file” smell?) Tried to import from the export file. No love.
So the “export” generated an SQL dump file, but the import expects a WXR file - a Wordpress eXtended Rss file. It’s a proprietary xml file. However, it will only accept a 2MB upload, and the SQL file is almost 4MB - the XML would be even more.I ended up manually importing the old posts, then going through each one and re-associating them with authors and categories. Wheee. Someone owes me a triple-mocha-short.
I have seen more of the underbelly of Wordpress than I care to. As Neitzsche said, “Whoever battles monsters should take care not to become a monster too, for if you stare long enough into the Abyss, the Abyss stares also into you.”
